Dan HessDan Hess, President

Dan is an experienced leader, practitioner and advisor in multi-channel marketing, sales and corporate strategy. Through Thought Motor, Dan consults across diverse industries to assess, develop and improve business practices and evaluate potential investments and acquisitions.

Prior to founding Thought Motor, Dan served as Vice President at Tribune Interactive (TI), a division of Tribune Company that manages the Internet operations of major media brands such as the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, WGN-TV, KTLA-TV and many others. At TI, Dan led the development of new consumer and advertiser products and strategies, mobile and database marketing, behavioral targeting, marketing research and measurement, trade marketing and corporate communications.

Prior to joining TI, Dan was part of the original executive team that built comScore (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leading marketing consultancy and research firm. Dan oversaw comScore's corporate marketing group, built the practice teams that served clients within the Automotive, Travel, Retail and Technology industries, and led early acquisition programs to build the world's largest consumer panel. During Dan's six years at comScore, the company grew from startup to $60 million in revenue and more than 350 employees.

Previously, Dan held various management roles throughout ten years at Information Resources, Inc. While at IRI, Dan consulted with major consumer marketing firms including Nestle Purina Pet Care, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Wm. Wrigley Co., and Church & Dwight Co. in the development of marketing and sales strategies.

In 1999, Dan launched the first service to measure the connection between consumers' online behavior and offline purchasing. In 1998, he jointly led a turnaround of IRI's database division, dramatically improving its operations, product quality and culture.

Within the financial services industry, Dan spearheaded the marketing and distribution of IRI retail scanner data to securities firms including Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and PaineWebber for use in investment and M&A analysis.

Dan serves as advisor and Entrepreneur in Residence at TransFS.com, a comparison shopping site for credit card processing services, and on the advisory board of ConnectVets.org, a non-profit veterans' service organization. He has served on the boards or advisory boards of Readōz.com, the Pew Internet and American Life Project in Washington DC, the Ad:Tech conference and the Technology Executives Club. Dan has been a frequent speaker at industry and academic events, and his analysis of consumer and marketing trends have been cited by many global media sources.

Dan holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Rochester.
